Aughton is built on a low sandstone hill, and it falls about forty-five metres across one parish — roughly sixty-seven metres at Holborn Hill and Moss Delph Lane, fifty-four at Granville Park, and twenty-two down at Holt Green and Bowker’s Green. Cold air drains to the bottom of that, so the low end of the village holds frost after the top has cleared.
That is why two lawns three hundred metres apart can behave like different gardens: one burning off in June, the other still wet and mossy in March. The old quarry between Delph Lane and Quarry Drive is the same story made visible — rock faces exposed where the covering never was. The sandy ground is also recorded as very prone to wind erosion, which is a real consideration on any border cleared in spring and left bare.
Aughton is ten minutes from the yard on Green Lane, so it sits on the weekly round rather than being a special trip — which is why a mid-week slot is usually available at short notice here. We work across Ormskirk, Maghull and Burscough too — send a postcode and we will tell you either way.
East of the village
On the Shirdley Hill blown sand the profile drains fast and holds very little. A lawn that looked good in May goes straw-coloured within a fortnight of dry weather, and watering it is throwing money at the wrong problem.
High northern ground
Around Long Lane, Moss Delph Lane and Delph Lane the mapping shows no superficial deposit at all — sandstone close to the surface, with very little for roots to get into. Turf laid straight onto it lifts at the seams and dies back in the first dry spell.
The till pockets
A few hundred metres from ground that burns off, glacial till holds water all winter. Those lawns come out of February compacted and full of moss, and they want aeration and drainage rather than more feed.
Under the big trees
Aughton's mature specimen trees are much of what makes the village look the way it does, and they are also why grass under them stays thin. That is a shade problem, and no lawn treatment fixes it.
Old boundaries
Where larger plots were subdivided, the original boundary hedge stayed put. It is now too big for the garden it stands in, and bringing it back takes a staged reduction rather than a trim.
Autumn, unevenly
Tree-lined roads and verge planting mean the leaf volume in a Granville Park or Delph Lane garden is far out of proportion to its own trees. Left on a lawn over winter it kills the grass under it.
Sloping fronts
Granville Park sits on the southern slope of the sandstone hill, so front gardens fall towards the road. Fresh topsoil, mulch and grass seed move downhill in heavy rain unless the bed is edged or the planting holds it.
The sandy ground
The soils here are recorded as very prone to wind erosion. A border stripped back and left bare in March can lose its surface before anything germinates, which is why we mulch or plant straight after clearing rather than leaving it open.
