Scarifying is controlled injury to a lawn, and the whole job turns on doing it in the weeks when the grass can heal the damage.

Scarification is the mechanical removal of thatch and moss from an established lawn. Blades cut down through the mat of dead stems and living moss, lift it out, and leave the soil open to air, water and feed. It is controlled injury: the lawn looks worse before it thickens, which is why the month it is done in decides whether it works at all.
Against a hand rake
A spring-tine rake works on a small lawn with a light covering. On a sward with an established mat of dead stems underneath it, hand raking pulls the top off and leaves the layer that is doing the damage exactly where it is.
Against a mosskiller
A chemical blackens moss and leaves it in the lawn, where it still blocks water and feed. Scarifying takes the bulk out physically, so the grass has room the same week rather than a dead mat to grow through.
Against leaving it
Thatch does not stop building on its own. The deeper the layer, the more of the lawn has to come out to clear it and the longer the recovery takes, so the job that is put off for three seasons is not the same job when it is finally booked.
The month is the first gate and the ground is the second. The soil has to be moist and neither waterlogged, frozen nor bone dry, which on the sand around Ormskirk rules out most of the winter and a wet week in any season. Scarifying saturated turf tears the sward out by the roots instead of combing the mat from it, so a booked date sometimes moves.
Most of the round sits on the Shirdley Hill sand, where water collects above the till beneath it and the surface stays saturated all winter. A lawn on that ground comes out of February wet, compacted and mossy, so there is a great deal to take out and very little chance of taking it out cleanly before the ground has dried. That is why the work waits for the September window rather than the first mild week of spring.

How deep the mat is, how much of the green is moss rather than grass, and whether the cause is shade, acidity, compaction or standing water.
If the moss is a drainage or pH problem, scarifying on its own buys you a season. We say that before you book rather than after.
The lawn is cut shorter than usual so the blades reach the mat rather than the leaf, and any surface debris is cleared off.
Under an hour
The machine goes over in more than one direction, taking the mat out in stages rather than stripping the lawn in a single deep pass.

Everything raked out is bagged and taken away, and we tell you what to expect week by week while the sward closes.
How it is priced
By lawn area, by how deep the mat is, and by how the machine gets in. A lawn carrying years of moss produces several times the arisings of a maintained one and takes longer to clear, and a rear garden reached through a house is slower than one with a side gate. We price it after seeing the lawn, and the figure on your written quote is the one you pay.
The commonest mistake
On the sand around Ormskirk the surface stays saturated through winter, so the lawn is at its mossiest exactly when it is least able to take the work. Wet turf lifts out in lumps instead of combing clean, and the repair is bigger than the job was.
Timing
An April scarify has a short recovery window before heat and weed germination arrive. The soils here also carry a spring wind erosion risk on an unstable open surface, and this is flat, drained, open country, so bare ground left in April does not stay put. Where the spring then turns dry, the lawn is thinner in July than it was in March.
Timing again
Late autumn and winter scarifying opens bare soil the grass can no longer close. Through a mild wet winter that bare surface is the moss habitat the work was meant to remove, so the lawn comes out of it worse than it went in.
The durable answer
Scarification removes the moss that is there and nothing about the conditions that suited it. Compaction is an aeration job, acidity and feed are a treatment job, and working out which of the three is driving it is the moss control job. This is usually one of three, not the answer on its own.
