Lawn moss control is two pieces of work. A mosskiller blackens the moss over one to two weeks and it is then raked out, which clears what is growing today. The second piece is identifying what grew it, whether that is shade, a surface that stays wet, acid ground or mowing too short, and changing that condition so the grass holds the space instead.
Against the shop bottle
Any mosskiller will blacken moss. What a bottle cannot do is tell you whether the lawn is mossy because of shade, because the surface stays wet, because the ground is acid or because it is mown too short. The diagnosis is the part that changes next year.
Against raking alone
Pulling moss out by hand or by machine lifts what is growing today and leaves bare soil behind. On ground that favoured moss over grass in the first place, the bare soil is an opening for more of it rather than for the grass.
Against leaving it
Moss colonises the space thin grass is no longer holding, so a lawn left alone does not come back on its own. The longer the mat sits, the more of the sward is shaded out underneath it and the more reseeding the recovery needs.
Taking moss out opens bare soil, and bare soil only closes if the grass is growing. That bounds the job at both ends: not before summer stress has passed, and not after growth stops. Work also waits on the ground itself being neither waterlogged, frozen nor bone-dry, which in a wet West Lancashire autumn can mean moving a booked date.
Moss is the commonest lawn complaint in this district, and three local things stack to cause it. The Sollom association sand around Ormskirk is very acid where it has never been cultivated, and acid ground suits moss over grass. Autumn and winter here are long, mild and wet, so the surface rarely dries. And water perching above the boulder clay keeps the top of the profile saturated even where the sand below drains freely. Shade from a terrace or a tree-lined Aughton road finishes it.

We look at shade, how long the surface stays wet after rain, whether the ground is compacted, how short it is being mown, and on sandy ground we test the pH.
If the cause is acidity, compaction or drainage, we say so before you spend anything, because a treatment on its own buys a season rather than a fix.

Dead moss blackens within one to two weeks. It is then raked out, which is when the lawn actually looks different and when the bare patches show.

How it is priced
By lawn area, by how heavy the mat is, and by whether the same visit is worth combining with aeration or reseeding. Access matters too, since a knapsack and a rake have to get to the back garden. The price you get is the one on your written quote, after we have seen the lawn.
The failure mode
The RHS is explicit that control with a mosskiller is only temporary unless the conditions that allowed the moss to establish are changed. Shade, compaction, poor drainage, acid soil, close mowing and weak grass are the listed causes, and none of them is touched by a chemical.
Acidity
The sandy soils around Ormskirk are described as very acid where they have never been cultivated, and acid ground favours moss over the ryegrass most lawns are sown with. A feed is not a pH correction, which is a separate point from feeding being worthwhile.
Product
The RHS advises that ferrous sulphate should not be used unless it is a constituent of a proprietary, HSE-approved lawn mosskiller. It also stains stone and metal, which is how most homeowners find out they have overapplied it.
Timing
Moss raked out of a lawn in February, in high summer or in December leaves open ground the grass cannot close. Through a mild, wet Lancashire winter that bare, shaded surface is the exact habitat the work was meant to remove.
