Lawn mowing and edging is a regular cut at the height the season calls for, with the edges cut back against beds and paths and the arisings collected and taken away. Spring and autumn cuts run higher than summer ones, and the interval follows growth rather than the diary. Feeding and weed control are a separate visit, as are scarifying, aerating and patching bare ground.
Round against one-off
A booked round clears two weeks of growth at a height the lawn is already sitting at. A one-off on a lawn nobody has touched since spring clears a whole season plus the leaf fall, and the volume of waste is most of the difference in what it costs.
Height, not tidiness
Spring and autumn run up to 40 mm, summer comes down to between 13 and 25 mm, and November goes about 5 mm above the summer height. Holding those heights is what keeps a sward thick enough to crowd out what would otherwise colonise it.
What happens to the cuttings
Waste a trader generates on a customer's property is commercial waste, so it cannot go to a household tip and a brown bin only takes cuttings, never turf, soil, stones or rubble. We load ours and take them, which is why a visit ends with an empty garden.
Never mow wet or frosty grass. Frozen blades are brittle and rupture instead of cutting, so the line browns off as footprints, and a mower across saturated ground compacts it, which is the root cause of both the moss and the poor surface drainage in this district. Water sits above the boulder clay here all winter, so a booked visit in a wet week moves rather than going ahead.
Ormskirk lawns sit on wind-blown sand over boulder clay, and the water that collects above that clay is why the same lawn is saturated in February and burnt in July. It is one profile, not two faults, and it decides when a mower can go on it. How it is priced
By the area of lawn, the length of edge, how the machine gets in, and how often we come. Volume of arisings and their disposal moves it as well, and it moves most on a first visit to a lawn that has got away. The price you get is the one on your written quote, after we have seen it.
The one that does lasting damage
Both damage the turf and compact the soil under it. Compaction is the cause sitting under the moss and the standing water that most owners here treat as separate faults, and it takes aeration to undo what one wet visit can do in twenty minutes.
Left too long
Taking a season's growth down to summer height in a single cut scalps it, opening bare soil at exactly the point in the year when something else will take that space. It comes down over two or three visits instead.

Estate and new-build gardens
