A seasonal garden tidy-up is a single booked visit that takes a garden back to usable: borders cut back, weeds off, edges recut, the lawn cut where growth allows, and the leaves and arisings cleared and taken away. It is booked twice a year at most. The autumn tidy is defined by leaf fall and the end of growth, the spring tidy by the start of it.
Against a round
A round visit clears what has grown since the last one. A tidy-up clears a whole season, and in autumn the leaf fall with it, so it is sized as volume and time rather than as a slot in a diary. Different job, different customer, and both are worth having.
Against doing it yourself
Cutting back is the easy half. A season of borders, hedge trimmings and leaves is far more than a brown bin holds, and the council subscription refuses turf, soil, stones and rubble outright. We load it, take it away and give the written description of the waste that the duty of care requires.
Against a blind cut
Spring-flowering shrubs carry next year's flower on wood they made last year, and an indiscriminate autumn cut puts that wood in the barrow. Knowing which stems come down now and which wait until after they flower is the difference between a tidy garden and a bare one.
It is an offence to take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built, and the offence attaches to the active nest rather than to any calendar date. The spring tidy opens as the main nesting season begins in early March, so every hedge and dense shrub in the scope gets a visual check immediately before it is cut, the work runs panel by panel, and a section holding an active nest is left until the young have fledged.
The round crosses three growing mediums inside a fifteen-minute drive. Ormskirk and Aughton sit on the Shirdley Hill sand, where winter water perches above the till and the surface stays wet and mossy long after the cut-back. Tarleton, Hesketh Bank and Banks are mossland peat, which compacts under a barrow when wet and will not rewet once it has baked. Skelmersdale and the newer Burscough estates are made ground over a construction pan. A tidy that ignores which one it is standing on leaves ruts that outlast the visit.

How it is priced
By the size of the garden, how far it has got away, access for a barrow and a van, and above all the volume of arisings. That volume is what separates this from a round visit: a tidy-up clears a season, and in autumn the leaf fall with it, where a round visit clears a fortnight. We confirm the disposal route before we quote, and the price you get is the one on your written quote, after we have seen the garden.
The commonest mistake
An indiscriminate autumn cut removes the overwintering structure the borders need and, on spring-flowering shrubs, the wood that carries next year's flower. Those shrubs are pruned immediately after they flower, not before. Summer and autumn shrubs flower at the ends of the current season's growth, so those take the spring cut instead.
What one visit cannot do
Much of what a neglected garden needs in October cannot legitimately be done in October. Stone fruit is pruned June to August, conifers close at the end of August, and once-flowering roses are cut after they flower. A single autumn visit produces a tidy garden and a dated list, not a caught-up one.
Two ends of the round
Inland of the coast this is flat, drained, open country, which is textbook cold-air drainage. On a clear still night cold air pools on the mossland flats rather than running off, so the moss villages hold frost when the Ormskirk and Aughton ridge does not. Growth stops at different points across a twenty-minute drive, which is why the visit is dated to the garden rather than to the month.
The waste
The domestic garden waste subscription takes leaves, weeds, grass cuttings and twigs, and refuses turf, soil, stones and rubble. Separately, waste a trader generates on your property is commercial waste wherever it came from, so a contractor's load has no household recycling centre route in Lancashire at all.
