Garden waste removal is the disposal half of a garden job, booked on its own: prunings, clippings, leaves, bramble and cut-back border material loaded and taken away, along with lifted turf and the soil that comes with it. Cutting the garden back is clearance; this is what happens to the heap afterwards, and where it is allowed to go.
Against the tip
Waste a trader generates on your property is commercial waste irrespective of where it came from, and Lancashire's household recycling centres do not accept it. Taking the material away is not an extra on top of the work, it is the only lawful way the heap leaves the garden.
Against your own bin
The borough's garden waste bin takes leaves, weeds, grass cuttings, twigs, small branches and cut flowers. It does not take turf, soil, stones or rubble, which is exactly what a lawn lift or a border dig produces.
Against a boot-and-trailer run
A season's cut-back does not go in a car, and dormant material is lighter and less bulky than the same growth cut in summer. Booking the removal with the work means the destination is agreed in advance rather than the heap standing in the garden while it is worked out.
The constraint on this work is regulatory rather than seasonal. Waste a trader takes from a customer's garden is commercial waste wherever it came from, so it cannot go to a household recycling centre in Lancashire, and the duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 binds every load: transfer only to an authorised person, with a written description of what is in it.
The two household recycling centres this round passes, Glenburn Road in Skelmersdale and Abbey Lane in Burscough, are both closed to trade waste, so the material has no short local answer. Volume here is lumpy rather than steady: whole Skelmersdale estates were planted from one palette in the 1960s and their boundary screens are reaching the end of their size together, and a lifted lawn on the Ormskirk sand comes up heavy with soil the brown bin will not take.

We look at what the material actually is — soft green waste, woody prunings, turf and soil, or a mix — because the type decides where it is allowed to go.
Logs worth keeping, a compost heap you want left, the bramble you want gone. It is marked out with you before anything is lifted.
Where the load is going is agreed before the day rather than on it, because there is no council route for trade waste here and the material decides the site.
Carried out by hand along the route we agreed, with boards where the ground is soft, then raked over so the garden is left clear rather than scuffed.
Half a day for a typical load
The waste leaves with a written description of what is in it, which is what the duty of care requires at every transfer.
How it is priced
By volume first, then by what the material is: soil and lifted turf weigh far more than the same barrow of soft green waste. Access and carry distance move it again, and so does disposal, which is charged by volume. The price you get is the one on your written quote, after we have seen the heap.
The heap that stays
A clearance that ends with the arisings stacked behind the shed is half a job. The material is bulkiest in October and November, which is also when it is most likely to be left standing.
Soil
Turf comes up with the soil attached, and the subscription refuses both. It is the commonest surprise on a lawn or border job, and it changes where the load can go and what it costs.
Knotweed
Soil or plant material with Japanese knotweed in it may be controlled waste with its own destination rules. Where we think we have found it we stop, say so, and refer it on: identification and treatment are specialist work.
Mixed loads
Hardcore, furniture and builders' waste are a separate stream with a separate destination. Mixed into green waste they change where the whole load is allowed to go, so they are kept apart on site or left.
