Aeration is the job that makes feeding, seeding and moss treatment hold, because it changes the one thing underneath them all.

Lawn aeration is mechanical relief of compaction. Hollow tines lift plugs of soil out of the lawn, or solid tines punch channels into it, so that air, water and feed reach the root zone instead of sitting on the surface. It is not thatch removal, not overseeding and not moss killing, though it is what makes those three last.
Against mosskiller alone
RHS is explicit that moss control will only be temporary unless the conditions that allowed the moss to establish are changed, and compacted soil is one of the listed conditions. Aeration is the part of that list a machine can actually shift.
Against feeding harder
A feed put onto a sealed surface either runs off or stays in the top inch, where the roots that need it are not. Opening the profile first is what lets the same bag of feed reach the root zone rather than the thatch above it.
Against lifting the lawn
Relieving compaction mechanically leaves the lawn usable within days and is repeated on an interval of years, not seasons. Stripping and relaying turf costs far more, takes the lawn out of use for a season, and does nothing about the ground beneath it.
The month is the guide and the ground is the rule. Tines only do their job in soil that is moist and firm: on saturated ground they smear the hole walls shut instead of opening them, and on frozen or baked ground they will not enter. In a wet autumn that can mean moving a booked visit by a week rather than aerating on the day.
Most of this round sits on the Shirdley Hill Sand, where water collects above the till beneath it. The surface stays saturated through winter and the sand above it dries fast by July, which is one soil profile behaving as the survey describes rather than two separate faults, and it is why moss and compaction are the district's commonest lawn complaint. The estate gardens at Skelmersdale and the newer Burscough and Ormskirk fringe plots have their own version: a thin skim of topsoil over a pan at spade depth.

We check how deep the firm layer starts, whether water is standing, and whether the problem is surface compaction or a pan left by construction. That decides the method and whether aeration alone is the answer.
Solid spiking where the lawn is lightly compacted and in use, hollow-tining where water is standing and the ground needs material taken out rather than pushed aside.
Worked in overlapping passes so the whole lawn gets the same treatment, rather than the strips that are easy to reach.
Half a day on a typical domestic lawn
Hollow-tine cores are soil. They are either broken down and worked back into the sward as a top dressing, or they leave the property, because they have no route through the household bin.
The lawn looks worse before it looks better. We say what to expect over the following weeks, what to overseed or feed alongside it, and roughly when it is worth doing again.
How it is priced
By lawn area first, then by ground condition, by whether it is hollow-tined or spiked, and by whether a machine can get to the lawn at all. A first pass on ground that has never been aerated takes longer than the visits that follow it, and cores that have to leave the property are priced in rather than assumed. The price you get is the one on your written quote, after we have seen the lawn.
The commonest mistake
On wet soil the tine polishes the wall of the hole as it goes in, so the channel seals instead of draining. The lawn is left marked, the water still sits on top, and the job has to be done again in better conditions.
The other extreme
A lawn browns off first where it is compacted, which is exactly when owners ring. But baked ground will not take a tine, and grass under heat stress has no capacity to recover from being worked over. The right answer is to wait for September.
Moss
A mosskiller blackens what is there and the moss returns, because the compacted, saturated surface that suited it has not changed. Aeration addresses one of the reasons directly, and is why moss control is quoted alongside it rather than instead.
New-build and estate gardens
Where a thin layer of topsoil sits over subsoil that has had plant driven over it, the hard layer can start below tine depth. Aeration helps, but decompaction and working organic matter in are part of the same answer, and we say so before quoting.
