Leaf clearance is the autumn round that takes fallen leaves off the lawn first, then the borders, paths and hard surfaces, and removes them. It runs across several visits while the trees are still dropping rather than as one tidy at the end, because the damage a leaf mat does to grass happens while the leaves are sitting on it, not when they are finally lifted.
Against a rake and the brown bin
A rake and the council's garden waste bin genuinely cover a small lawn with one tree over it. The subscription bin takes leaves, but collections run fortnightly and pause from the start of December to the start of February, so the route thins out in the weeks the leaves are heaviest.
Against mowing them off
Taking a light scatter off with the mower is a reasonable trick early on. Once the layer is deep enough that the machine rides over it instead of lifting it, the mower stops being a leaf tool and starts pressing a wet mat into the grass.
Against leaving it until spring
A mat left down over a mild, wet winter does not protect the lawn underneath it. The grass comes through thin or gone and moss fills the gap, so the bill moves from clearing leaves to scarifying, overseeding and moss work.
Frost stops a visit, not the date in the diary. Frozen grass blades are brittle and break rather than bend, so walking and barrowing across a frosted lawn browns off every footprint. On a hard morning we move the visit rather than work over it.

How it is priced
By how much leaf there is, which is decided by what is overhead more than by the size of the garden, then by lawn area, by how many visits the season needs, and by access for a barrow and a van. Scheduling
A single tidy once the trees are bare clears the leaves but not the weeks they spent on the lawn. The damage is done while the mat is down, so a round through the season is worth more than one large visit at the close of it.
Moss
The RHS is explicit that a mosskiller is only ever temporary unless the conditions that allowed the moss to establish are changed. Shade and permanent damp are two of those conditions, and under a leaf mat both of them are the leaves.
